Ahmadinejad stars in new Israeli TV advertisement

Yes, yes, I know: I went silent again. Sorry about that. I have about 10 posts rolling around in my fevered brain, but have been an utterly blocked writer of late. Don’t worry, I’ll get over myself soon.

Meanwhile, thank goodness for Haaretz’s Sara Miller. Not only has she convinced me that a bicycle is the best way to get around the city, but she also wrote an article that saves me the trouble of writing a post. It’s short, so I just copied and pasted the whole thing, then added the video clip. Voila – lazy bloggers’ paradise.

Israel’s satellite company YES has adopted a new ally in its war on cable rival HOT – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

A new commercial for the company shows Ahmadinejad – who in real life has repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel – addressing the Iranian nation.

“My brothers,” says the mock Iranian president in a speech broadcast through loudspeakers across the country, “the uranium is in our hands and after Monday it will be goodbye to Israel.”

Unexpectedly, the Iranian leader’s supporters – dressed in Shiite religious garb – take exception to the speech, dismayed at the prospect of missing their favorite Israeli television series.

“What are you talking about?” asks one of his followers. “It’s the last episode of Danny Hollywood on Monday.”

The declaration of Iranian president’s intent to destroy Israel is met with riots, and the police are deployed to control protests which suddenly take the form of a big budget musical.

The commercial, produced by advertising company McCann Erickson, is entirely a parody of “Cazablan,” a hit Israeli musical of the 1960s.

  2. I was aghast when I saw this commercial for the first time. I do wish it had English subtitles also! All I could get out of my Israeli friends is “It’s just s a joke and advertisement for YES.” Blah.

Thanks for the mini translation and finally making me chuckle about it! :)

  7. Hey – on the topic of writer’s block. Any coping mechanisms that have pulled you out? Self-affirming proverbs written on post-it notes aren’t cutting it for me these days.

  8. I’d think it wouldn’t be very funny to anyone who doesn’t know the movie Kazablan, which, by the way, is totally 70s, not 60s :)

@lirun, people in north Tel Aviv had a similar shock years ago when they woke up to see giant posters of Khomeini and a mass of religious supporters — they didn’t realize a scene from “Not Without my Daughter” was being filmed .
