Sunny Winter Saturday at the Tel Aviv Port

Today was unusually cold for Tel Aviv, with a high of only 13 Celsius, but the sun shone brightly. Diana and I went to the port to have lunch at Iceberg Vulcano (between Hangars 11 and 13, at the fountain square). It was packed with families, but that didn’t detract from our enjoyment of an excellent meal. Join me for a little food porn?

  6. The food looks really good. I think I’ll munch more humus from the fridge!
But I usually don’t like the port. The cafes and restaurants there are too big and too expensive. I just stayed in the center of town…

  7. I agree that the port is too crowded on the weekend and most of the restaurants are too big, but Iceberg Vulcano is more intimate. And it’s set back from the water, so it’s not as crowded. Maybe try it during the week..?

  8. Makes you wish you were really there, now if you also included pictures of the surrounding area that would make it even nicer!!

  10. After 5 years spent scorning Tel Aviv, as a good olè hadash coming from Milan and really zionist that just-Jerusalem-is-Israel and all the stuff… I’m starting to take into consideration to move to the Big City (and that pizza motivates me even more…). I’m really curious to know what do you think about Jerusalem…

  11. Hi Sharon,

A friend of mine who lives in Jerusalem puts it this way: “There are Jerusalem people, and there are Tel Aviv people. ” I am a Tel Aviv person.

I lived in Jerusalem for three years, but I never liked the city very much. Despite its physical beauty, I always felt oppressed by the religious and political tension, and weighed down by the city’s history. I prefer Tel Aviv for its modernity, its Levantine atmosphere, its secular, tolerant attitude and its dynamic contemporary culture scene.

And if you’re looking for Zionism, what better place to live than the first modern Hebrew city?

Plus, the winters are much milder – and you have the beach at your doorstep for cooling off during the summer. ;)

  12. Ahhh, a typical crispy freezing day on the Mediterranean :) I like to think your orange-y drink is a tequila sunrise ;)

  13. It wasn’t a tequila sunrise, but it was delicious nonetheless – white wine, peach syrup, fizzy water, freshly squeezed orange juice, Cointreau and red grapefruit for a garnish. You’d have loved it.

  14. Iceberg Vulcano? This is just a confirmation that it is not for nothing that I dislike TLV.

And was it, like, light breakfast or what? Was there some real food served?

    Re your friend from Jerusalem:

There are Jerusalem people, there are Tel Aviv people, and then there are normal people. Ho ho.

  19. *slurp*

the only thing i didn’t like was the look of what i eventually realised was an olive on the sliced fish.

i won’t say what i thought it looked like… although once i realised what it actually *was*, I got straight back in the mood for food porn.

    yum!

  25. Hi Lisa, I loved your site and your pictures. I recently took a picture at the Tel Aviv Port that is so special and unique. I would really like to find someone who might he interested in using it as a promotion or perhaps a contest. It is very special. Maybe you can help me, thanks, madeline abraham
