There was a time, like 4-5 years ago, when I would have been moved by this. No more. I regard the rift between jews and arabs, israelis and palestinians, as multilayered, total and final. Not that the other side is illegitimate or inferior. It is just so alien it cannot be coopted. Trying to do so – like in those roadside banners – is flight from reality.

Hooray. What a gift you have given us. Thanks so much! The first time I saw this poetry festival hanging from trees on Shderot Chen, I KNEW that Tel Aviv was my kinda town. Guess the powers moved it to Rothschild for greater visibility? Anyway, I loved all your pics, comments, and links. About that fun typo in caption for Adunis;-) … please leave it!
When I blogged about the temple of the TA Cinemateque — its library, I listed outstanding films I watched there, among them: Mahmoud Darwish: The Land is the Language. It's in Arabic with subtitles (maybe just Hebrew, I forget). Terrific opportunity to meet, observe, and listen to this amazing man and poet.

just fyi, the name of the poet is generally transliterated adonis, not adunis (pronounced “a-do-nees” in lebanese).
it's not a typo — he shares his nom de plume with the figure from mythology. adonis is a stock levantine deity, so you've got a lot of stuff named after him around here. apparently, the poet (born ali ahmad said asbar) picked it after getting too many rejection slips for submissions under his real name.
as for the mythical adonis, his roots were in lebanon (his father was supposedly from byblos) and he died in what is now know as the adonis valley along the nahr ibrahim (aka adonis river) in mt. lebanon, causing the river to run red with his blood.

Hey Carine, I'm so pleased to see your comment! I've been reading and enjoying your blog for months... I really debated about the spelling of Adonis / Adunis. Brittanica online and a few other online sites spelled the name with a "u," which threw me a bit since I remembered learning that he'd taken the name from the mythical Adonis, so I just assumed I'd been taught wrong.

You are right, it is always a problem how to transliterate vowels in Arabic (only 3, pronounced with great variation according to region) into Latin languages. Recent standards in transliteration is to only use “i, u, a” unless widely off the mark. Hence, “Adunis” conforms to the current Arabic transliteration rules, if we set a side for now that it is not an Arabic name to start with
